Solana Holland trades a wide range of potato varieties. Through years of knowledge of and experience in various markets, we know the most important properties. In addition to yield, resistances to diseases and pests are also an important starting point. In our breeding program, crossing such resistances into new seedlings is one of the objectives.
Resistances and diseases:
common scab
Resistances by market
For the organic market, Solana Holland has developed potato varieties with resistance to Phytophthora, for the export market strongly common scab resistant varieties with a high yield and for the French fries market varieties that have good resistances against potato cyst nematodes, wart and tobacco rattle virus. The newly developed varieties are strong against virus Y, which is appreciated by our seed producers.
Common scab
Common scab is one of the most common disorders of the skin and can occur on almost all soil types. A potato with common scab looks less attractive. For the producer, this means a decrease of the market value. For the manufacturing industry, processing efficiency decrease (due to additional peeling losses). Infected potatoes are also an disadvantage for the seed potatoes producer because it is not suitable for all markets any longer. Through extensive trial field testing Solana Holland develops potato varieties that are strong against common scab: Amanda (6.3), Edison (6.9), 7 FOUR 7 (6.6) Connect (6.8), Gaya (6.4), King Russet (7.5), Lanorma (6.3), Masai (6.6) Octa (6.7) and Ultra (6.8).
